Got Chess?

Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:26 pm (PDT)

"Chess teaches *foresight*, by having to plan ahead,* vigilance*...by having to keep watch over the whole chessboard...*caution*, by having to restrain ourselves from making hasty moves...and finally, we learn from chess the greatest maxim in life, that even when everything seems to be going badly for us we should not lose heart, but always hope for a change for the better, and steadfastly continue searching for the solutions to our problems." - Benjamin Franklin Although I'm not very good at it, playing chess has empowered me to be more successful than I dreamed possible. Knowing just the basic moves, chess is an excellent way to exercise the mind for playing the game of life. Since it allows us to excercise both right and left brain, our creative senses are heightened for solving everyday problems. Many times I have encountered issues with coworkers or senior level people. Playing a game of chess, even if I lost, has helped me think of ways to resolve issues at the office. Or maybe a manger or client has presented me with a challenging project. At first glance the project seems overwhelming with many facets that require careful planning. As I write out the project plan and organize the resources, I take a time out to play chess. Bada bing bada boom, each issue encountered becomes easier to solve. Learning tactics and strategy in chess extends itself in helping us resolve personal and business challenges. Chess is not just for smart people, but anyone who plays chess definitely becomes smarter. Red Hat Linux/JBoss Parsippany Road Tour

    Fri Sep 12, 2008 5:03 am (PDT)

During last night's conference call Genesius mentioned the value of a free
    lunch and some technical training.

Thus I thought the following might be of interest to North Jersey IT
professionals. Red Hat is offering a half day (morning) seminar on some of
their products along with a free networking lunch. The seminar is about the
Linux operating system and JBoss web server application stack (see URL in
the message attached below my signature block for details).

I signed up a while ago and will certainly be there.

Also Erin Britt of Red Hat asked me to pass along the word to others I know
that may be interested. Due to the event only being a few days away you
should probably contact Erin directly to assure you can attend.

If any ETP members are going please let me know as I'd love to meet up with
    you at this event.

Upcoming Information Security Events in NYC

Posted by: "Dave Chen" wchend@gmail.com wchend3

    Fri Sep 12, 2008 8:48 am (PDT)

    Hi,

During Wednesday's conference call I heard several CEO mention that their
organization specialized in information or network security. I'm on the
board of NY Metro chapter of InfraGard ( www.nym-infragard.us
http://www.nym-infragard.us/ ). InfraGard is a program of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation dedicated to information sharing and dialogue
between the public and private sectors concerning the protection of critical
infrastructures. We will be hosting the monthly event on 9/23 at PACE
University. The event is free of charge. Please register on the url
    provided.

For those who focus on Application Security or PCI Compliance, Open Web
    Application Security Project ( www.OWASP.org http://www.owasp.org/ ) is
holding their annual conference next week in NYC. It is similar to the
BlackHat event, except that the focus is on application security. The event
cost $400 and trainings are additional. I am promoting this event because I
know the people who run this organization. I have no financial interest in
    this event.

Both opportunities are good networking events where you can also learn about
    Information Security.

    Yours truly,

    Dave Chen, CISM, CISSP

    * The most problematic part of a resume for people seems to be crafting
their accomplishments. An accomplishment is a results-oriented statement.
That's what interviewers want to know. If your resume doesn't indicate what
you're capable of, the chance of an interview in which to sell yourself is
slim. *You're selling a product, and the product is you.* *Read more . . .

  5. The post didn't mention anything about flipping the chess board over after losing to your younger brother. How does that help someone deal with conflicts at work?

  6. Dear "Anonymous" [sic] Brother,

Thanks for contributing a comment to close the "gap" of the post. Have some answers to your question

    1. Apparently your older brother has no tolerance for losing. He probably wins consistently now.

    2. Inevitably this formative experience toughened you for work.

    3. Both now have psyche insights into coaching, parenting, etcetera

    Check!
